How we help patients treat depression and anxiety with targeted TMS

With the unprecedented changes that have disrupted our lifestyles, our mental wellbeing has never been more important than it is now. As part of the Mental Health Awareness Week, I want to educate others about a scientific and targeted approach to mental health.

One in six people experience a mental health problem every year in the UK. It shows how common these problems are and I believe that a one-size-fits-all approach to addressing and treating them is not the most effective solution. In order to successfully diagnose and manage mental health conditions, we need a targeted approach to look at each case individually. Why? Because every mind is different.

At TranQuality, we provide a unique therapy service combining Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to treat depression and anxiety. We use state of the art QEEG analysis to identify the source of depression or anxiety in a patient’s brain and use this to target the TMS. The TMS treatment uses magnetic pulses to stimulate parts of the brain that are either over-active or under-active.

The standard approach of TMS has been to treat over the left frontal area of the brain over 10- 30 sessions depending on the patient need. By using our targeted TMS, we have been able to reduce the treatment session to four consecutive daily sessions, thereby significantly improving the efficiency of our patients’ TMS treatment. TMS is delivered on an out-patient basis - there are no restrictions on daily life, no side effects, and a patient is fully awake during treatment. Any antidepressant medication can continue as usual. A typical TMS treatment session takes only about one hour.

In 2016, the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended TMS as a safe and effective treatment for depression. As such, we have been at the forefront of developing our targeted TMS therapy, and in March 2017 our TMS service won a Medipex award for innovative treatment in mental health.

One of our former patients stated: “After suffering severe depression and anxiety for over two decades, trying countless therapies, I had resigned myself to the fact that life was never going to improve. Then I was lucky enough to be put forward for TMS, and the results were truly amazing. TMS has literally been life changing for me, not only was I able to stop taking antidepressants for the first time, but my sleep improved, with renewed energy and overall mood”.

I hope that this blog post helped you understand TranQuality’s approach to mental health better and why it is worth considering TMS as a treatment. If you have any questions about this innovative method, please contact us here and our staff will get in touch with you.
